Overview

Safari Details

The 9 Day Northern Circuit is one of Kilimanjaro's most scenic and best-acclimatised routes. The journey begins on the western side of the mountain through rainforest, crosses the Shira Plateau, and follows the quiet northern slopes beneath the dramatic northern ice fields.

With an additional acclimatisation day and a long, gradual approach to high camp, this itinerary gives trekkers more time to adjust to altitude while enjoying varied landscapes, wide views, and a quieter trail. The summit attempt begins before midnight from Kosovo Camp, reaching Stella Point and then Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

The route is guided by an experienced mountain crew and includes park fees, meals on the mountain, tents, safety equipment, guides, porters, and transfers between Moshi and the mountain gate.

9 Day Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit Route itinerary

Day 1

Moshi to Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a morning transfer from Moshi to Londorossi Gate for registration and final permit checks. Continue by vehicle to the Lemosho trailhead, where you meet the mountain crew and begin walking through lush montane rainforest. The forest is rich with moss-covered trees, ferns and birdlife, and blue monkeys may occasionally be seen in the canopy. The trail climbs gradually to Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big Tree Camp), where hot meals and tents are ready. Use the afternoon to settle in, drink plenty of water and meet your guides before dinner and an early night.

Day 2

Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

After breakfast, leave the rainforest behind and enter the heather and moorland zone. The path climbs steadily over ridges and across open slopes, revealing the first broad views of the Shira Plateau and the western face of Kilimanjaro. Your guide sets a comfortable pace designed for acclimatisation, with regular breaks for water and snacks. Arrive at Shira 1 Camp in time for lunch or afternoon tea. The campsite sits on the high plateau, offering a dramatic sunset and a clear view of the mountain above.

Day 3

Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

Today is a shorter and gentler day, deliberately planned to support acclimatisation. Cross the expansive Shira Plateau on undulating volcanic terrain, with views toward the Shira Cathedral, Kibo Peak and the distant western valleys. The hike gives your body time to adapt while keeping you active at altitude. Reach Shira 2 Camp by midday, allowing time for an optional acclimatisation walk with your guide. Return to camp for a hot dinner, hydration briefing and rest before the route moves higher.

Destination: Route planning day

Day 4

Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Moir Hut

This is an important acclimatisation day: climb higher during the day and sleep lower at night. Trek east through alpine desert toward Lava Tower, a spectacular volcanic rock formation at approximately 4,630 metres. Enjoy lunch near the tower and monitor how your body responds to the altitude. From Lava Tower, descend to Moir Hut, located in a sheltered valley beneath the Lent Hills. Although the day includes a descent, the altitude exposure is valuable preparation for the summit. Your guides check everyone carefully and can lead a short optional walk if conditions allow.

Day 5

Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp

Leave Moir Valley and join the less-travelled Northern Circuit. The route climbs out of the valley and follows a series of gradual ridges across the remote northern slopes of Kilimanjaro. The scenery is open, rugged and quiet, with extensive views over the plains of Kenya and the mountain's northern ice fields. This is one of the route's most peaceful days because there are fewer trekkers than on the southern approaches. Arrive at Buffalo Camp in the afternoon, where the team prepares dinner and you can watch the changing light over the northern wilderness.

Destination: Route planning day

Day 6

Buffalo Camp to Third Cave Camp

Continue east on a gentle traverse across alpine desert, passing small valleys and volcanic formations. The trail remains gradual but the altitude is significant, so the guide maintains a slow, steady rhythm and encourages frequent hydration. The northern side of the mountain feels remote and gives excellent views toward Mawenzi Peak and the Kenyan borderlands. Reach Third Cave Camp in the early afternoon. Spend the rest of the day resting, eating well and preparing layers for the colder temperatures ahead.

Destination: Route planning day

Day 7

Third Cave Camp to School Hut

After breakfast, turn south-east and climb steadily toward School Hut, the final camp before the summit attempt. The terrain becomes more barren and dramatic as you approach high alpine desert beneath Kibo. This is a shorter trekking day so that you can arrive early, rest, organise summit clothing and eat an early dinner. Your guides provide a detailed summit briefing covering pace, safety, hydration and the overnight schedule. Try to sleep early; the summit climb begins shortly before midnight.

Destination: Route planning day

Day 8

School Hut to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Wake shortly before midnight for tea, light snacks and the start of the summit push. Climb slowly by headlamp over steep volcanic scree toward Stella Point on the crater rim. From Stella Point, continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa. Celebrate with photographs and a moment to take in the glaciers and vast views before beginning the descent. Return to Barafu Camp for a short rest and lunch, then continue down through changing vegetation to Mweka Camp. This is the longest and most demanding day, followed by a well-earned dinner and final night on the mountain.

Destination: Route planning day

Day 9

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate to Moshi

After breakfast, descend through the lush rainforest toward Mweka Gate. The trail can be damp and uneven, so trekking poles are useful for the final descent. At the gate, sign out with park authorities and receive your summit certificate if you reached Stella Point or Uhuru Peak. Say farewell to the mountain crew, then transfer back to Moshi for a hot shower, celebration and overnight rest. Your expedition concludes with memories of one of the world's most rewarding high-altitude climbs.
