Seven days is enough to experience three of northern Tanzania’s most important wildlife areas without turning every day into a transfer. The key is to count nights carefully, reduce unnecessary backtracking and spend at least two or three nights in Serengeti.
The sample itinerary below begins and ends around Arusha. It can be adjusted for migration season, family travel, luxury camps, budget requirements or a Zanzibar extension.
Day 1: Arrival in Arusha
Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport or Arusha Airport and transfer to your hotel. Use this day to rest, meet your safari representative, review the route and prepare luggage.
If your international flight arrives early, optional activities may include a coffee experience, local market visit, cultural programme or a relaxed afternoon at the lodge. Avoid scheduling a long game drive after an overnight flight unless you know your energy level.
Overnight: Arusha
Main purpose: Arrival, briefing and recovery
Day 2: Arusha to Tarangire National Park
After breakfast, drive to Tarangire National Park. The park is known for baobab-dotted landscapes, elephants, birdlife and seasonal concentrations of animals around the Tarangire River.
A full afternoon game drive provides time to explore woodland, riverine habitats and open plains. During dry months, the river system becomes especially important to wildlife.

Day 3: Travel to Serengeti
Drive through the Ngorongoro highlands toward Serengeti. Depending on permits and timing, there may be an optional cultural or archaeological stop. Enter the Serengeti and continue with a game drive toward your camp.
This is a travel day, but the journey becomes part of the safari. Landscapes change from cultivated highlands to open plains.
Overnight: Central Serengeti or seasonally appropriate region

Day 4: Full-Day Serengeti Safari
Spend a full day exploring Serengeti. Your guide may recommend an early start, a picnic lunch, or separate morning and afternoon drives.
Central Serengeti is well known for resident wildlife and predators. During migration-focused trips, the camp location may move to southern, western or northern Serengeti according to the season.
Do not create a rigid checklist of species. Watch behaviour: lions interacting, elephants feeding, giraffes moving through woodland, vultures descending, or cheetahs scanning the plains.

Main purpose: Full-day wildlife viewing
Day 5: Second Serengeti Day
A second full day is important because every game drive is different. You may revisit an active area, explore a different habitat or focus on photography.
An optional hot-air balloon safari may be available in selected areas and normally requires advance booking. Travellers not taking the balloon can continue with a normal game drive.
Overnight: Serengeti
Main purpose: Deeper exploration and flexibility
Day 6: Serengeti to Ngorongoro Highlands
Take a final Serengeti game drive before travelling toward Ngorongoro. Depending on the route, you may stop at a viewpoint or visit Oldupai Gorge if time and permits allow.
Stay on or near the crater rim for early access, or choose Karatu for a wider selection of properties and potentially lower rates. Each location has trade-offs in price, temperature and drive time.
Overnight: Ngorongoro rim or Karatu
Main purpose: Final Serengeti sightings and highland scenery
Day 7: Ngorongoro Crater and Return to Arusha
Descend into Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive. The crater floor contains grassland, woodland, wetlands and seasonal water sources within a dramatic caldera.
Wildlife can include zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, lions, hyenas, elephants and, with luck, black rhino at a distance. Sightings remain natural and cannot be guaranteed.
After the crater experience, drive back to Arusha or continue to the airport according to your flight schedule. Avoid booking an international departure too close to the expected road arrival time.

Is This Itinerary Too Fast?
This route is active but balanced for many first-time visitors. It includes three Serengeti nights and avoids adding too many parks. It becomes rushed when travellers try to include Lake Manyara, Arusha National Park, cultural tours, multiple Serengeti regions and a flight to Zanzibar within the same seven days.
For a slower journey, add one night in Tarangire, Karatu or the relevant Serengeti migration area.
Seasonal Adjustments
January to March
Use southern Serengeti or Ndutu positioning for calving-focused travel.
June and July
Consider central or western positioning depending on current herd reports and camp operations.
August to October
Add northern Serengeti nights when river-crossing opportunities are a priority. This may require eight or nine days to avoid excessive driving.
November and December
Central, eastern or southern positioning may work as herds respond to short rains.
